Have I told you the story of Nickel?
I always knew when I had a business it would be called Nickel (being the first 3 letters of my first and last name) so when the dream started to become a reality, I wanted to keep an actual nickel coin with me, as a sort of totem and tangible reminder to keep the momentum going.
I’ve travelled to the US quite a bit over the last few years so I knew I would have a nickel coin somewhere but after searching high and low I couldn’t find one anywhere, so I gave up the hunt figuring the timing wasn’t right.
Months earlier my mum had given me a bunch of coins from random countries, and I had just stuffed it into my handbag not giving it a second thought. That was until the satchel of coins broke and went through every crack and cranny of my handbag, and as I was scooping out coins from Singapore, Indonesia and New Zealand, I hit the jackpot. I finally found a nickel coin! I immediately felt lucky. I mean I had been carrying around those damn coins for months not even thinking for a second the one coin I wanted would be in there - but there it was.
I decided to put the nickel coin somewhere safe, so I unzipped a different section of my handbag, only to find… a Mars Bar! OMG!! I had bought it a few weeks earlier to give to my son after soccer and forgotten all about it. So now I am thinking that not only is this coin bringing me luck, but also prosperity, so I decided from that day forward I would definitely carry it with me every day. My daughter once said to me “What if you lose it?” and I told her with absolute sincerity, “there is nothing special about that particular coin. It has power because I gave it power. There is nothing remarkable about it, and if I were to lose it, I’ll just replace it with another nickel coin.”
I believed that 100% until the day I went to take the coin out of my back pocket, and it wasn’t there. My heart sank. The power was gone. I tried not to panic as I frantically went through the day and where it could have been lost. I had been working at a theatre all day so it had to be there somewhere and fortunately for me I was going back the next day.
That next morning I got to the theatre early. I bustled past everyone and made sure I was the first one to go in, and as I entered my eyes were darting everywhere trying desperately to find the stupid coin. I searched under the seats, side of the stage, the dressing rooms, it wasn’t anywhere.
Oh well... like I told my daughter, I would just get another one. I tried to convince myself that would fill the void, but inevitably I had to admit the disappointment had me rattled.
At lunch, after a disheartening morning, I slumped to the floor to take a break. I just happened to cast my eyes forward and right there in front of me, under one of the theatre chairs, tilted upwards against the leg, was my coin! I scrambled to snatch up the coin so fast, people must have thought I was homeless, but I didn’t care, my treasure was found.
Still to this day, I carry that exact coin with me whenever I am working, although I am definitely a lot more careful with it! I truly believe it not only gives me luck and prosperity, but it reminds me to stay focused, dream big and to treasure my value – literally.
One way or another, we all put our faith and belief in symbols. Imagine if we believed in ourselves as just as much.

"8 years ago I attended a program called 'Leading at the Front Line'...
I learned so many things from that program but the one poignant takeaway for me was - what I did mattered! I finally felt valued and important and needed and you bet I was going to give 100% from that day on. And I did. Wow!
That moment never left me, and after many different roles (and industries) it was ultimately the reason to initiate a career in learning and development. I wanted to be the person that was able to bring moments like that, out in others.
If I could help people feel valued and important and needed, and evoke energy and excitement into their everyday routines - how much more would they give back into their role? And what impact would that have for their team...their division...their business...their industry?!
After nearly 20 years’ experience in Leadership & Management, I am more passionate than ever about my mission to help people gain vocational empowerment and help them
to understand 2 things - who you are matters and what you do matters!"
